Most of our LED work is conversion rather than new construction, because the economics are usually compelling.
When a retrofit makes sense
If the cabinet, faces, and mounting are structurally sound, converting the internals to LED gives you a sign that performs like new for a fraction of replacement cost. This is common with cabinets from the fluorescent era, which were often very well built.
When replacement is the better spend
If the faces are crazed or yellowed, the cabinet is corroded, or the branding has changed, putting new lighting inside an old shell is money spent on the wrong part of the problem. We will say so. A sign with perfect illumination and a faded, cracked face still looks neglected.
Converting neon
Neon has a look that LED still does not perfectly replicate, and some signs are worth keeping as neon for exactly that reason. Where the priority is reliability and running cost, LED conversion removes the transformers, the high voltage, and the fragility, and it is what most commercial clients choose.
Power supplies are the part that fails
In an LED sign the modules usually outlive the power supply. We specify supplies with appropriate headroom rather than running them at their limit, and we mount them where they can be reached without dismantling the sign, because that decision determines what your next service call costs.
